- On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved introducing the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to raise the number of Supreme Court judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India, from 33 to 37.
- On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved two semiconductor projects in Gujarat worth about ₹3,936 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission — Crystal Matrix's GaN-based Mini/Micro-LED display facility at Dholera and Suchi Semicon's OSAT unit at Surat — taking approved ISM projects to 12.
- On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the Mission for Cotton Productivity with an outlay of ₹5,659.22 crore for 2026–27 to 2030–31, aligned with the '5F' vision, to raise cotton yields and quality and make India self-sufficient in cotton.
- On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved ECLGS 5.0, targeting additional credit of ₹2,55,000 crore for MSMEs, other businesses and airlines hit by the West Asia situation, including ₹5,000 crore for airlines.

- The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won 102 of Kerala's 140 Assembly seats in results declared on 4 May 2026, ending 10 years of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule, while the BJP won three seats.
- Actor C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu on 4 May 2026 with 108 of 234 seats on its debut, ahead of the DMK's 59 and the AIADMK's 47, but fell 10 short of the majority mark of 118.
- The BJP-led NDA won 102 of Assam's 126 Assembly seats in results declared on 4 May 2026 to retain power for a third straight term, with the BJP alone winning 82, 18 more than the majority mark of 64.
- The BJP won 207 of the 293 West Bengal Assembly seats declared on 4 May 2026, reducing the ruling Trinamool Congress to 80 from 215 in 2021, and Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by 15,105 votes.
