Cabinet approves Bill to raise Supreme Court judge strength from 33 to 37
On 5 May 2026 the Union Cabinet approved introducing the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to raise the number of Supreme Court judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India, from 33 to 37.

Cabinet approves ₹5,659.22 crore Mission for Cotton Productivity for 2026–27 to 2030–31

On 5 May 2026 the CCEA approved a ₹1,570 crore Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat, to be jointly built by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited, enabling repair of vessels up to 300 m long in India.
North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj: defence production at record ₹1.54 lakh crore
At the three-day North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said on 5 May 2026 that India's defence production has reached ₹1.54 lakh crore, a 174% rise in a decade, and Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth credited indigenous weapons for the success of Operation Sindoor.

Centre approves MSP procurement of sunflower in Karnataka and raises gram procurement limit in Maharashtra
On 5 May 2026 Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved procurement of 9,023 tonnes of sunflower at MSP in Karnataka for Rabi 2026 and raised Maharashtra's gram procurement limit for Rabi 2025-26 to 8,19,882 tonnes, together giving MSP support of over ₹4,886 crore.
India and EU launch €15.2 million joint call on EV battery recycling under the TTC
On 5 May 2026 India and the EU launched a third coordinated call for proposals on recycling EV batteries under Working Group 2 of the India–EU Trade and Technology Council, with a combined €15.2 million (~₹169 crore) funding pool and a deadline of 15 September 2026.

On 5 May 2026 the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved three railway multitracking projects — Nagda–Mathura, Guntakal–Wadi and Burhwal–Sitapur 3rd and 4th lines — costing about ₹23,437 crore and adding about 901 km across 19 districts in six states.
