• German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz began his first official visit to India on 12 January 2026, holding talks with PM Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad that produced a joint statement and a list of outcomes including visa-free transit through Germany for Indian passport holders.
• Retail inflation based on the All India Consumer Price Index was 1.33% (provisional) in December 2025, MoSPI said on 12 January 2026, staying below the RBI's lower tolerance limit for a fourth straight month.
• The Union Government notified the National Sports Governance (National Sports Bodies) Rules, 2026 under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, the Sports Ministry said on 12 January 2026.
• India's fish production rose to 197.75 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25 from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14, an increase of 106%, the Fisheries Ministry said on 12 January 2026.

• New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi delivered India's national statement at the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi on 11 January 2026, saying India reached 50% non-fossil installed power capacity in 2025, five years ahead of its NDC target.
• The Ministry of Electronics and IT said on 11 January 2026 that structured stakeholder consultations are under way to develop a robust regulatory framework for mobile security, as part of its routine engagement with industry on safety and security standards.

• New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said on 10 January 2026 that India's non-fossil installed capacity rose 22.6% in 2025 to 266.78 GW, with 49.12 GW added, solar at 135.81 GW and wind at 54.51 GW.
• Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal concluded a two-day visit to Brussels (8–9 January 2026), where he and EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič guided negotiators to resolve pending issues and expedite the India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
• The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) said on 10 January 2026 that it had taken suo motu cognizance against 27 restaurants for levying service charge by default, an unfair trade practice under Section 2(47) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, with penalties of up to ₹50,000 and refund orders.
