Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 on removal of detained Ministers introduced in Lok Sabha and referred to Joint Committee

Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on 20 August 2025. The Bills seek to provide for removal of the Prime Minister or a Union Minister, and a Chief Minister or Minister of a State or UT, who faces charges punishable with imprisonment of five years or more and is arrested and detained in custody for more than 30 days. According to the Home Minister, if bail is not secured within 30 days, the person is to be removed on the 31st day or will otherwise cease to be able to hold office. The Lok Sabha adopted a motion referring the three Bills to a Joint Committee of 21 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha members, which is to report by the last day of the first week of the next session.
