💞 Emotional & Social Intelligence

The components of emotional intelligence (EI), social intelligence, and how to choose the best answer in situational questions.

📌 1. Emotional Intelligence (EI)

EI = recognising, understanding and managing your own and others’ emotions. The scientific model was given by Salovey and Mayer (1990); Daniel Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence” (1995) made it popular. Its measure is called EQ.

Goleman’s 5 componentsMeaningIn practice
Self-awarenessKnowing your emotions, strengths and weaknessesRealising “I am getting angry”
Self-regulationManaging impulses and emotionsNot replying at once in anger
MotivationPursuing goals without external rewardsTrying again after failure
EmpathyUnderstanding others’ feelings from their viewpointListening carefully to an upset colleague
Social skillsBuilding relationships, teamwork, resolving conflictsMediating a team quarrel

📌 2. Social Intelligence (SI)

  • E. L. Thorndike (1920): “the ability to understand and manage people and to act wisely in human relations”.
  • Two sides: social awareness (sensing others’ situation) and social facility/skill (speaking and behaving appropriately).
  • Howard Gardner (multiple intelligences, 1983): interpersonal intelligence ≈ social intelligence; intrapersonal = understanding oneself.

📌 3. How to Solve Situational Questions

  • The best answer is usually calm, empathetic, within the rules, solution-focused and constructive.
  • Eliminate extreme options: aggressive (shouting, revenge), escapist (ignoring, quitting), blaming others.
  • Priority: safety of life → duty/rules → relationships → your own convenience.
  • First listen and understand, then speak privately with facts; go to the proper authority if needed.
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • “Doing nothing” or “complaining at once” is usually not the best answer.
