Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced on 18 June 2025 at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, that Central Government employees covered under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will be eligible for retirement gratuity and death gratuity. The benefit will follow the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021. The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare issued an Office Memorandum dated 18 June 2025 to this effect. The Minister said the move meets a long-pending demand of government staff and brings parity in retirement benefits. The Department of Financial Services had notified the UPS on 24 January 2025 as an option under NPS with effect from 1 April 2025.
