On 9 December 2024, in India, the Department of Science and Technology reported a study led by Prof Mojibur R Khan of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), a DST autonomous institute, which found that extract of 'Melye-amiley', a traditional fermented bamboo shoot variety of Tripura, has anti-obesity effects. In cell culture studies it reduced intracellular lipid accumulation and increased fatty acid beta-oxidation.
