TRAI mandates phase-wise shift to '1600' numbers for banks and financial firms
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on 19 November 2025 issued a Direction setting deadlines for entities regulated by RBI, SEBI and PFRDA to adopt the '1600' numbering series for service and transactional calls.
Summary
TRAI's 1600-series Direction aims to curb spam and fraud by letting people identify genuine calls from regulated financial institutions. The series was assigned by the Department of Telecommunications for the BFSI sector and government bodies, and about 485 entities have already taken over 2,800 such numbers. Under the schedule, commercial banks (public, private and foreign) must onboard by 1 January 2026, mutual funds and AMCs by 15 February 2026, and qualified stockbrokers by 15 March 2026; other SEBI intermediaries may migrate voluntarily for now.
