The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced on 19 December 2024 that end-to-end traceability of commercial SMS had been achieved. All major Principal Entities (PEs) registered their message transmission chains with Access Providers, and from 11 December 2024 SMS traffic sent through unregistered paths is being rejected. The traceability framework, built on blockchain-based Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), follows TRAI's direction of 20 August 2024, and about 1.13 lakh active PEs were brought under it.
