Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa won the Masters section of the 87th Tata Steel Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, on 2 February 2025. He and world champion D Gukesh finished the 13 classical rounds tied on 8.5 points after both lost in the final round, Gukesh to compatriot Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa to Vincent Keymer. In the blitz tiebreak Gukesh won the first game, Praggnanandhaa levelled and then won the sudden-death game to take the tiebreak 2–1 and his maiden Masters title. Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov finished third. It was the second year running that Gukesh had tied for first and lost the tiebreak.
