NITI Aayog releases decarbonisation roadmaps for cement, aluminium and MSMEs
NITI Aayog on 21 January 2026 released three reports on green transition roadmaps for the cement, aluminium and MSME sectors, consistent with Viksit Bharat 2047 and net zero by 2070.
Summary
The reports were prepared with line ministries, industry, research institutions and knowledge partners. NITI notes that raising manufacturing's share of GDP from 17% to 25% is a key national objective while India has pledged net-zero emissions by 2070. The cement report projects production rising about sevenfold, from 391 million tonnes in 2023 to around 2,100 million tonnes in 2070, and says carbon intensity must fall from 0.63 tCO₂e per tonne of cement to about 0.09â0.13 tCO₂e by 2070. It proposes refuse-derived fuels, clinker substitution, scaling up Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and effective use of the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.
