The Ministry of Home Affairs declared the Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) and the Awami Action Committee (AAC) unlawful associations for five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, on 11 March 2025. The government said their members promoted and aided the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India through anti-national and subversive activities, incited people to disturb law and order, supported terrorism and promoted hatred against the established government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the outfits posed a threat to the unity and integrity of the country. Under the UAPA, such a declaration is referred to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, a one-member body headed by a High Court judge, which decides whether there is sufficient cause; once confirmed, the notification remains in force for five years.
