Majuli–Jorhat ferry resumes after IWAI dredges the Neamati–Kamalabari channel
On 30 October 2024, IWAI said dredging of the silted Neamati–Kamalabari channel in Assam had allowed ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli on National Waterway 2 (Brahmaputra) to resume.
Summary
On 30 October 2024, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) said its dredging of the Neamati–Kamalabari channel in Assam had allowed ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli to resume. Services had been disrupted from 20 October, when the channel depth fell to 0.5 metres against a required minimum of 1.5 metres. At the Assam government's request, IWAI used the cutter suction dredger CSD Alakananda with the tug boat Khudiram Bose, combining jet and pipeline dredging on the affected 2-km stretch. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the ferry runs on National Waterway 2 (Brahmaputra).
