INST Mohali develops nose-to-brain drug delivery for brain tuberculosis

On 17 October 2024, the Department of Science and Technology said scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, Punjab, developed chitosan nano-aggregates to deliver TB drugs to the brain through the nose.

Summary

On 17 October 2024, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) said scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, Punjab, led by Rahul Kumar Verma, developed chitosan nano-aggregates to deliver tuberculosis medicines directly to the brain through nose-to-brain (N2B) delivery, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. Central Nervous System TB (CNS-TB) is among the most dangerous forms of TB. The method uses the olfactory and trigeminal nerve pathways in the nasal cavity; chitosan's mucoadhesive property helps the particles stay in place. The study was tested in mice infected with TB.
