India's first open-sea marine fish farming project uses advanced open-sea cage technology brought by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) to begin cage-based fish farming in the Andaman Sea. Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, launched it on site at North Bay, Sri Vijaya Puram, during a field visit, and said the Ministry of Earth Sciences will collaborate with the Andaman & Nicobar UT administration. He called it one of the first major steps towards realising the Blue Economy and said the aim is to boost livelihoods of fishing communities.
