IIG develops Indian Equatorial Electrojet (IEEJ) model to understand ionospheric processes for GNSS
On 30 October 2024, DST said scientists of the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Navi Mumbai, using two decades of magnetometer data from Tirunelveli, had developed the 'Indian Equatorial Electrojet (IEEJ) Model' to predict Equatorial ElectroJet variations important for GNSS-based navigation.
Summary
On 30 October 2024, the Department of Science and Technology said scientists of the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), Navi Mumbai, had developed an empirical model named the 'Indian Equatorial Electrojet (IEEJ) Model'. It predicts variations of the Equatorial ElectroJet (EEJ), an intense current of the order of 100 kA flowing at about 105â110 km height near the geomagnetic equator, which passes close to India's southern tip. IIG measures the EEJ with ground-based magnetometers at the equatorial station of Tirunelveli, and the model uses more than two decades of observations. Understanding EEJ variations helps assess satellite-based (GNSS) navigation.
