A ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian armed groups took effect in Gaza at 11:15 on 19 January 2025, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, with a first phase of 42 days.

Summary

A ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian armed groups came into effect in Gaza at 11:15 on 19 January 2025, through mediation by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, according to UN OCHA. The first 42-day phase provides for the gradual release of some Israeli hostages in exchange for some Palestinian detainees, withdrawal of Israeli forces from population centres and large-scale expansion of aid. On 19 January three Israeli women hostages were handed over via the International Committee of the Red Cross, which then facilitated the release of 90 Palestinian detainees. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said more than 630 aid trucks entered Gaza that day, at least 300 of them going to the north. UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the start of the ceasefire.
