Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on 22 July 2025 that preparations for Census 2027 began with the publication of the gazette notification dated 16 June 2025 expressing the Government's intent to conduct the Population Census. A two-day conference of Directors of Census Operations was held in New Delhi on 3-4 July 2025 to discuss the roadmap, including the frame of administrative units, data collection through mobile apps, the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, self-enumeration and training.
