CCI issues cease and desist order against Table Tennis Federation of India
The Competition Commission of India passed a cease and desist order on 12 December 2024 (announced on 13 December 2024) against the Table Tennis Federation of India and three affiliates for abuse of dominance, but imposed no monetary penalty.
Summary
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) passed a cease and desist order dated 12 December 2024 under Section 27 of the Competition Act, 2002 against the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and its affiliates, The Suburban Table Tennis Association, the Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association and the Gujarat State Table Tennis Association; the CCI announced the order on 13 December 2024. The order found contravention of Sections 3(4) and 4 of the Act, resulting in refusal to deal and abuse of dominance, as the bodies restricted the organisation of tournaments and sought to stop players from taking part in events through WhatsApp advisories, notices and restrictive bye-laws. Given the corrective steps taken during the investigation, the CCI decided not to impose any monetary penalty. The case, No. 19 of 2021, was filed by the TT Friendly Super League Association.
