On 10 October 2024, in India, the Department of Science and Technology said scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, an autonomous DST institution, found evidence from palynomorphs, organic remains and geochemical assessments of significant hydrocarbon generation potential in the eastern South Karanpura coalfield in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. The eastern Sirka coalfield showed higher potential. The South Karanpura coalfield has 28 major coal blocks.
