Bose Institute identifies pineapple gene that can fight fungal disease

On 22 July 2025, the Science Ministry reported that Bose Institute researchers identified the AcSERK3 gene in pineapple that can activate defences against Fusariosis.

Summary

Scientists at the Bose Institute, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, identified the AcSERK3 gene in pineapple that can activate the plant's defences against Fusariosis, the Ministry of Science and Technology reported on 22 July 2025. Fusariosis, caused by the fungus Fusarium moniliforme, warps stems, blackens leaves and rots the fruit. The research was led by Prof. Gaurab Gangopadhyay and focuses on the Somatic Embryogenesis Receptor Kinase (SERK) gene family.
