On 5 October 2025 at Kopargaon in Ahilyanagar district, Maharashtra, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated India's first cooperative multi-feed Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at the Maharshi Shankarrao Kolhe Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana, a cooperative sugar mill. The Ministry of Cooperation said it is the first time in the history of India's cooperative sugar mills that a CBG plant and a potash granule unit are being set up. The project cost about ₹55 crore and will produce 12 tonnes of CBG a day and 75 tonnes of potash from jaggery/molasses — both products India now imports. Shah said the Centre will fully support 15 selected sugar mills to set up CBG and potash granule units with help from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended.
