🪑 Seating Arrangement, Puzzles & Data Sufficiency

Linear and circular seating, floor/box puzzles and data sufficiency — place fixed information first, then apply conditions.

📌 1. Linear Seating

  • Facing north: their right = your right. Facing south: their right = your left.
  • Distinguish 'immediate neighbour' from 'second to the right'.
  • 'Right of X' = anywhere to the right; 'immediate right of X' = the very next seat.

📌 2. Circular Seating

  • Facing the centre: right = anticlockwise, left = clockwise.
  • Facing outward: right = clockwise.
  • With n people, 'opposite' exists only for even n; it is n/2 seats away.
💡 Memory Tip: Start with the person who has the most clues, and draw each possible case separately.

📌 3. Floor / Box Puzzles

  • Bottom floor = 1; 'above' means a higher number.
  • Make a table: rows = floors, columns = person/attribute.

📌 4. Data Sufficiency

OptionMeaning
AI alone is sufficient
BII alone is sufficient
CEither I or II alone is sufficient
DBoth together are needed
ENot sufficient even together
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • In DS you need not compute the answer — only check whether one definite answer is possible.

📌 5. Practice MCQs

📝 Practice MCQs (prepared by SF Prep — not PYQs)
Q1. A, B, C, D, E sit in a row facing north. C is in the middle. A is to the immediate left of C. E is to the immediate left of A. D is to the immediate right of C. Who is at the right end? Practice
(A) D
(B) B
(C) E
(D) A
Correct answer: (B)
Order (left to right): E, A, C, D, B — B is at the right end.
Q2. Six friends sit in a circle facing the centre. Q is opposite P. R is to the immediate right of P. S is to the immediate right of Q. Who is opposite R? Practice
(A) P
(B) Q
(C) S
(D) Cannot be determined
Correct answer: (C)
Facing the centre, right = anticlockwise. R is P's anticlockwise neighbour and S is Q's; both are one step the same way from the P–Q line, so R and S are opposite.
Q3. A building has 5 floors (bottom = 1). A lives just above B. B is on floor 2. C is on the top. D is above A but below C. Which floor is E on? Practice
(A) 5
(B) 3
(C) 4
(D) 1
Correct answer: (D)
B=2, A=3, C=5, D=4 ⇒ E = 1.
Q4. Question: What is X's age? I. X is 5 years older than Y. II. Y is 20 years old. Practice
(A) Both together are sufficient
(B) I alone is sufficient
(C) II alone is sufficient
(D) Not sufficient even together
Correct answer: (A)
Together X = 25; neither alone works.
Q5. P, Q, R, S sit in a row facing south. Q is to P's immediate right, R to Q's immediate right and S to R's immediate right. Who is second from the west end? Practice
(A) Q
(B) R
(C) S
(D) P
Correct answer: (B)
For a person facing south, right = west. East to west: P, Q, R, S ⇒ west end is S, second from it is R.
Q6. A, B, C, D, E, F sit at a round table facing the centre. Only C sits between A and B. D is opposite A. Who can be opposite B? Practice
(A) D
(B) C
(C) E or F
(D) A
Correct answer: (C)
A(1), C(2), B(3), D(4) — opposite B(3) is seat 6, which may be E or F.
Q7. Question: What day is today? I. Yesterday was Sunday. II. The day after tomorrow will be Wednesday. Practice
(A) Not sufficient
(B) Only I is sufficient
(C) Both together needed
(D) Either I or II alone is sufficient
Correct answer: (D)
I gives Monday; II also gives Monday (day after tomorrow Wednesday). Either alone is sufficient.
Q8. Five girls sit in a row facing north. Seema is at the left end. Reena is second to the right of Seema. Meena is to Reena's immediate right. Rita is not at either end. Where is Geeta? Practice
(A) At the right end
(B) In the middle
(C) Second from the left
(D) At the left end
Correct answer: (A)
Seema(1), Reena(3), Meena(4). Seats 2 and 5 remain; Rita not at an end ⇒ Rita 2, Geeta 5 (right end).
Q9. Three boxes are stacked: red, blue, green. Blue is just above red. Green is not at the bottom. Which is on top? Practice
(A) Blue
(B) Green
(C) Red
(D) Cannot be determined
Correct answer: (B)
Green not at bottom ⇒ red bottom, blue middle, green top.
Q10. Question: Is M taller than N? I. M is taller than O. II. O is taller than N. Practice
(A) II alone
(B) I alone
(C) Both together are sufficient
(D) Not sufficient even together
Correct answer: (C)
M > O > N ⇒ yes; neither alone links M and N.
Q11. Eight people sit in a circle facing the centre. B is third to the right of A. The person opposite B is how many places to the left of A? Practice
(A) 4
(B) 2
(C) 3
(D) 1
Correct answer: (D)
In 8 seats, opposite = 4 seats away. B is 3 right of A ⇒ opposite of B is 3 + 4 = 7 right of A = 1 left of A.
Q12. Question: How many boys are in the group? I. There are 30 students. II. Girls outnumber boys by 6. Practice
(A) Both together are sufficient
(B) I alone
(C) II alone
(D) Not sufficient
Correct answer: (A)
b + (b + 6) = 30 ⇒ b = 12; neither alone works.
Q13. In a 6-floor building (bottom = 1), P, Q, R, S, T, U live on different floors. P is on floor 4. Q is just below P. R is on the top. S is below Q but not at the bottom. T is above P. Where is U? Practice
(A) 2
(B) 1
(C) 5
(D) 3
Correct answer: (B)
P=4, Q=3, R=6, T=5, S=2 ⇒ U=1.
Q14. A, B, C, D sit around a square table facing the centre. C is opposite A. B is to A's immediate left. On which side of A is D? Practice
(A) Opposite
(B) Immediate left
(C) Immediate right
(D) Cannot be determined
Correct answer: (C)
Of four seats, A's left is B, opposite is C ⇒ the remaining seat, A's right, is D.
Q15. Question: Is x even? I. x is divisible by 4. II. x is divisible by 3. Practice
(A) Not sufficient
(B) II alone is sufficient
(C) Both together needed
(D) I alone is sufficient
Correct answer: (D)
Every multiple of 4 is even ⇒ I suffices; multiples of 3 can be even or odd (6, 9).
Q16. Five boxes V, W, X, Y, Z are stacked. X is in the middle. V is just above X. Z is at the bottom. W is above Y. Which is on top? Practice
(A) W
(B) V
(C) Y
(D) X
Correct answer: (A)
From bottom: Z(1), ?(2), X(3), V(4), ?(5). W above Y ⇒ Y=2, W=5.
Q17. Seven people sit in a row facing north. D is exactly in the middle. F is third to the right of D. Where is F? Practice
(A) Second from the right
(B) At the right end
(C) At the left end
(D) In the middle
Correct answer: (B)
D = seat 4; 4 + 3 = 7 = right end.
Q18. Question: What is Ram's rank? I. Ram is 3 ranks ahead of Shyam. II. Shyam's rank is 10. Practice
(A) II alone
