⚡ Work, Energy & Power

Conditions for work, kinetic and potential energy, conservation of energy, energy-conversion devices, power, simple machines and classes of levers.

📑 Topics on this page (Jump to Topic):
1. Work & Energy 2. Power 3. Simple Machines & Levers 4. Practice MCQs

📌 1. Work & Energy

  • Work W = F·s·cosθ (joule). Work is done only if there is displacement along the force.
  • At θ = 90° work is zero — e.g. walking horizontally with a load on the head, centripetal force in circular motion, pushing a wall (no displacement).
  • Kinetic energy KE = ½mv²; doubling velocity → KE becomes four times.
  • Potential energy PE = mgh; stretched spring, water held in a dam, a drawn bow.
  • Conservation of energy: energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only changed in form. For a falling body PE + KE stays constant.
DeviceEnergy conversion
Dynamo / generatorMechanical → electrical
Electric motorElectrical → mechanical
Cell / batteryChemical → electrical
Solar cellLight → electrical
MicrophoneSound → electrical
LoudspeakerElectrical → sound
Electric bulbElectrical → light + heat
PhotosynthesisLight → chemical

📌 2. Power

  • Power P = W/t, unit watt (J/s). 1 kW = 1000 W; 1 hp ≈ 746 W.
  • P = F × v — so on a slope a vehicle is run in low gear (more force, less speed).
  • Efficiency = (output work / input work) × 100%; no machine is 100% efficient.

📌 3. Simple Machines & Levers

A lever has three points: fulcrum (F), load (L) and effort (E). Whichever is in the middle decides the class.

ClassIn the middleExamples
FirstFulcrumScissors, see-saw, pliers, beam balance, hand pump
SecondLoadNutcracker, wheelbarrow, bottle opener, boat oar
ThirdEffortTongs, human forearm, fishing rod, broom
  • Mechanical advantage = load / effort. Second class always has MA > 1; third class always MA < 1.
  • Other simple machines: pulley, inclined plane (ramp), screw, wedge (axe), wheel and axle.
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • Pushing a wall for hours still means zero work in physics (no displacement).
  • A dynamo produces electricity; a motor uses it — do not swap them.
  • Tongs = third class, nutcracker = second class, scissors = first class.

1 W = 1 J/s.
Q9. Water stored in a dam has: Practice
(A) Kinetic energy
(B) Potential energy
(C) Chemical energy
(D) Nuclear energy

(A) 1000 J
(B) 10 J
(C) 50 J
