🔗 Computer Networking

Types of networks, topologies, network devices, transmission media, OSI and TCP/IP models and key protocols and ports.

📌 1. Network Types & Topologies

TypeAreaExample
PAN (Personal Area Network)About 10 metresBluetooth, USB tethering
LAN (Local Area Network)Room/building/campusOffice, school lab
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)CityCable TV network
WAN (Wide Area Network)Country/worldInternet (largest WAN)
TopologyFeature
BusOne main cable (backbone); if it breaks the whole network fails
StarAll connect to a central hub/switch; one failed computer does not stop others
RingClosed loop; data in one direction (token)
MeshEvery device connected to every other; most reliable, most costly
TreeHierarchy of star + bus
HybridMix of two or more
  • In a full mesh with n devices, links = n(n−1)/2.
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • Topology with a central hub = star; most reliable = mesh.
  • Bluetooth = PAN, not LAN.

📌 2. Network Devices & Transmission Media

DeviceFunction
HubSends data to all ports (broadcast) — "dumb"
SwitchUses MAC addresses to send only to the right port — "smart"
RouterJoins different networks using IP addresses; chooses the best route
BridgeJoins two LAN segments
RepeaterRegenerates weak signals
GatewayJoins networks with different protocols
ModemModulator-demodulator: digital ↔ analog
NICNetwork Interface Card — in every computer; carries the MAC address
MediumFact
Twisted pairCheapest; telephone and LAN (UTP/STP)
CoaxialCable TV
Optical fibreData as light; total internal reflection; fastest, immune to electromagnetic interference
WirelessRadio, microwave, infrared (TV remote), satellite, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Simplex = one direction (radio, keyboard); half-duplex = both directions, one at a time (walkie-talkie); full-duplex = both at once (telephone).
  • Data rate is in bps (bits per second); bandwidth = maximum data capacity.
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • A router works on IP addresses; a switch on MAC addresses.
  • Walkie-talkie = half-duplex; telephone = full-duplex.

📌 3. OSI & TCP/IP Models, Protocols

LayerNameExample/device
7ApplicationHTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS
6PresentationEncryption, compression, translation
5SessionOpens/closes sessions
4TransportTCP, UDP
3NetworkIP, Router
2Data LinkSwitch, Bridge, MAC
1PhysicalHub, repeater, cable
💡 Memory Tip: Bottom to top: "Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away" = Physical, Data link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application.
  • The OSI model was made by ISO — 7 layers. The TCP/IP model — 4 layers (Application, Transport, Internet, Network Access).
  • TCP = connection-oriented, reliable; UDP = connectionless, fast (video calls, games).
ProtocolUsePort
HTTPWeb pages80
HTTPSSecure web443
FTPFile transfer20/21
SMTPSend mail25
POP3Receive mail110
IMAPReceive mail (stays on server)143
DNSName → IP53
Telnet / SSHRemote login (SSH secure)23 / 22
DHCPAssigns IP automatically67/68
⚠️ Exam Traps:
  • Router = network layer (3); switch = data link (2); hub = physical (1).
  • HTTP port 80, HTTPS 443 — do not swap them.
