Uttarakhand becomes first state to bring Uniform Civil Code into force

The Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 (Act No. 3 of 2024) came into force in Uttarakhand on 27 January 2025, the date appointed by the Governor through a notification under section 1(2) of the Act. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami unveiled the notification and the UCC Rules, 2025 in Dehradun and launched the portal ucc.uk.gov.in for mandatory online registration of marriages, divorces and live-in relationships; Dhami was the first to register his marriage on it. The Code does not apply to members of Scheduled Tribes. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar linked the step to Article 44 (Directive Principles), which asks the State to endeavour to secure a uniform civil code.
