'Utkarsh', second Multi Purpose Vessel for Indian Navy, launched at L&T Kattupalli

Summary

Utkarsh, the second of two Multi Purpose Vessels being built by L&T Shipyard for the Indian Navy, was launched on 13 January 2025 at L&T, Kattupalli, Chennai, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The name 'Utkarsh' means 'Superior in Conduct'. The vessels will be able to tow ships, launch and recover targets, operate unmanned autonomous vehicles and serve as trial platforms for indigenous weapons and sensors. The 106 m vessels are designed for a maximum speed of 15 knots; the contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence and L&T Shipyard on 25 March 2022.
