The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released its Recommendations on Assignment of Additional Spectrum to Indian Railways for its Safety and Security Applications on 20 December 2024, in response to a Department of Telecommunications reference of 26 July 2023. TRAI recommended that, in addition to the 5 MHz (paired) already assigned in the 700 MHz band, another 5 MHz (paired) in the same band be assigned to Indian Railways for safety and security applications along railway tracks, for captive use. It recommended that spectrum charges for Indian Railways, NCRTC, other RRTS and Metro rail networks be levied using the formula for Royalty Charges and Licence Fees for captive use prescribed by DoT.
