TRAI extends PE–TM chain declaration deadline for SMS traceability to 10 December 2024
On 30 November 2024, TRAI directed access providers to ensure that all Principal Entities and Telemarketers declare their message chains by 10 December 2024 for traceable commercial SMS.
Summary
On 30 November 2024, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said that all commercial messages must be traceable from senders to recipients. Its Direction of 20 August 2024 had made this mandatory from 1 November 2024, and all access providers have deployed the technical solutions. To allow a transition, TRAI partly modified its Direction of 28 October 2024 and directed access providers to ensure that all Principal Entities (PEs) and Telemarketers (TMs) declare their PE–TM chains by 10 December 2024. More than 27,000 PEs had already registered their chains. TRAI had also asked sector regulators RBI, SEBI, PFRDA and IRDAI to sensitise the entities under them.
