Telugu Language Day 2026 marks Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy's 163rd birth anniversary

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana observed Telugu Language Day on 29 August 2026, the 163rd birth anniversary of Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, pioneer of spoken (Vyavaharika) Telugu.

Telugu Language Day was observed on 29 August 2026 in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Yanam to mark the 163rd birth anniversary of Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy. Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, born on 29 August 1863 at Parvatalapeta in Srikakulam district, led the movement to use spoken Telugu (Vyavaharika Bhasha) in writing and education in place of the classical literary style (Grandhika Bhasha). Gidugu also developed a script for the Savara tribal language. At the Andhra Pradesh state celebration in Vijayawada, organised by the Department of Language and Culture under Minister Kandula Durgesh, Telugu Language Awards carrying ₹25,000 each were presented.
