Sugar (Control) Order, 2025 replaces the 1966 Order
The Centre formulated the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025 after a review of the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966, the Food Ministry announced on 1 May 2025.
Summary
The Sugar (Control) Order, 2025 was formulated by the Government of India after a comprehensive review of the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966, to simplify the regulatory framework for the sugar sector. It adds API-based data sharing between sugar mills' ERP systems and the DFPD portal, absorbs the provisions of the Sugar Price (Control) Order, 2018 so that there will be no separate price order, and brings raw sugar and khandsari units with crushing capacity above 500 TCD under the Order. By-products such as bagasse, molasses, press mud and ethanol are also covered, and definitions of products such as plantation white sugar, khandsari, gur and bura are taken from FSSAI.
