SRS 2021 report: Maternal Mortality Ratio falls to 93, Infant Mortality Rate to 27

The Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021 was released by the Registrar General of India (RGI) on 7 May 2025. As per the Special Bulletin on Maternal Mortality 2019-21, India's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) fell by 37 points, from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 93 in 2019-21. The SRS Statistical Report 2021 shows the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) down from 39 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 27 in 2021, the Neonatal Mortality Rate from 26 to 19 and the Under-Five Mortality Rate from 45 to 31. The Sex Ratio at Birth improved from 899 to 913, and the Total Fertility Rate stood at 2.0 in 2021, against 2.3 in 2014. Eight States have already met the SDG target for MMR (70 or below by 2030), led by Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38) and Telangana (45).
