The second meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC), held at Kohora in Kaziranga, Assam, on 10 January 2025 and presided over by Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, announced investments of more than ₹50,000 crore in national waterways over the next five years. Initiatives worth more than ₹1,400 crore were announced across 21 Inland Waterway States, and the National River Traffic and Navigation System (NRT&NS) was launched. Sarbananda Sonowal announced 62 new jetties and a target of 1,000 green vessels in five years, and a Riverine Community Development Scheme was mooted. The IWDC is organised by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
