Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel 'Sanghmitra' launched at GRSE, Kolkata

On 20 May 2026 the Navy's Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Sanghmitra (Yard 3039) was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata, in the presence of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff VAdm Sanjay Vatsayan.

Summary

Sanghmitra (Yard 3039), a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) for the Indian Navy, was launched at GRSE, Kolkata on 20 May 2026 by Mrs Sarita Vatsayan, in the presence of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff VAdm Sanjay Vatsayan. A total of 11 NGOPVs are being built at two shipyards, Goa Shipyard Limited and GRSE, for surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, HADR and anti-piracy missions. The ship is named after Sanghmitra, the daughter of King Ashoka. The ship's crest shows the Ursa Major constellation and a red and white lighthouse.
