RRI scientists find teak leaf extract can act as a natural laser shield

On 27 June 2025 in New Delhi, the Department of Science and Technology reported that Raman Research Institute scientists found teak leaf extract can serve as a natural laser shield.

Summary

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) reported in New Delhi on 27 June 2025 that scientists at the Raman Research Institute (RRI), a DST-funded autonomous institute, found a use for discarded teak (Tectona grandis) leaves. The leaves are rich in anthocyanins, natural reddish-brown pigments that show nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. This makes the extract a candidate for optical power-limiting, protecting eyes and sensors from high-power lasers. Tests used green laser light, in both continuous-wave and pulsed modes, with Z-Scan and Spatial Self-Phase Modulation techniques. The work was published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry and offers an alternative to costly synthetic optical materials.
