Ram Sutar was born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village of Maharashtra's Dhule district and was a gold medallist from the Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai. Ram Sutar's works include the statues of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative pose and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on horseback in the Parliament complex, and the 182-metre Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Kevadia in Gujarat. Ram Sutar received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.
