Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi in Goa on 26 August 2026, in the presence of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister of State Shripad Naik. Patradevi is where the first group of satyagrahis entered Goa on 15 August 1955 during a peaceful satyagraha and was met with Portuguese machine-gun fire, and several satyagrahis were killed there. Rajnath Singh paid tribute to satyagrahis from across India, including Karnail Singh from Punjab, Sahodra Devi from Madhya Pradesh and Madhukar Damodar Chaudhary from Maharashtra. Rajnath Singh also recalled Operation Vijay of 1961, through which the Indian armed forces liberated Goa.
