He was a member of the École française d'Extrême-Orient from 1963 to 1967 and directeur d'études at the École pratique des hautes études from 1967 to 2004, where he taught Paninian grammar and classical poetry. His Indian honours included the title of Mahamahopadhyaya honoris causa (2013) and the Padma Shri (January 2024), and he spent long periods at his house in Yadavagiri, Mysuru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death, recalling his efforts to popularise Sanskrit studies in literature and grammar.
