On 7 October 2024, the Environment Ministry said the Red Panda Conservation Breeding and Augmentation Programme of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), Darjeeling, West Bengal, has been shortlisted by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) as one of the top three finalists for the 2024 WAZA Conservation & Environmental Sustainability Awards. The winner will be announced at the 79th WAZA Annual Conference in Sydney, Australia, on 7 November 2024. Between 2022 and 2024, nine captive-bred red pandas were released into Singalila National Park, West Bengal; three of the seven released females gave birth to five cubs in the wild.
