NTPC's NETRA and IIP Dehradun develop indigenous catalyst to make methanol from flue-gas CO2
On 30 October 2024, NTPC said its R&D wing NETRA, with the Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, had developed an indigenous catalyst for hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, producing methanol of more than 99% purity in a 10 kg/day pilot plant.
Summary
On 30 October 2024, NTPC said NETRA, its research and development wing, had developed an indigenous catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun. Long-duration performance tests are being carried out in a specially designed 10 kg/day methanol pilot plant, where 1 mole of CO2 and 3 moles of hydrogen pass through a fixed-bed down-flow reactor. The methanol produced has a purity of more than 99%. NTPC said the work supports capturing CO2 from power-plant flue gas and converting it into fuels and chemicals, in line with India's net-zero pledge for 2070.
