The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the results of the Comprehensive Modular Survey (CMS): Education, 2025, part of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey, on 26 August 2025. The survey covered 52,085 households and 57,742 students and found that government schools account for 55.9% of total enrolment, rising to 66.0% in rural areas against 30.1% in urban areas. Average household spending per student was ₹2,863 in government schools against ₹25,002 in non-government schools, and course fees were the largest expense at ₹7,111 per student. About 27.0% of students were taking or had taken private coaching during the academic year.
