The National Statistics Office (NSO) under MoSPI announced on 13 November 2025 that it will conduct a Survey on Migration from July 2026 to June 2027, and sought feedback on the draft survey schedule.
Summary
The NSO's Survey on Migration aims to give reliable estimates of migration rates, reasons for migration, short-term migration, rural–urban and inter-state patterns, return migration and the effect of migration on households. The National Sample Survey has covered migration since its 9th round in 1955, with dedicated rounds in the 18th (1963–64) and 64th (2007–08). More recent migration data came from the Periodic Labour Force Survey 2020–21 and the Multiple Indicator Survey 2020–21.
