Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 awarded to Francis Halzen for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and discovery of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos

On 6 October 2026, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 to Francis Halzen (University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA) for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

Summary

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on 6 October 2026 that the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 goes to Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA, as the sole laureate. Halzen was honoured "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin". IceCube is a cubic kilometre of ice at the South Pole fitted with light sensors that record the flashes produced when neutrinos collide with atomic nuclei; it was finished in 2011. Halzen, born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium, first presented his idea of capturing neutrinos in South Pole ice in 1988, and the prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor.

Correct answer: C — The South Pole

IceCube is a cubic kilometre of ice at the South Pole equipped with light sensors.
Q3 Advanced

Which institution decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026?

Show answer

Correct answer: D — The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

The press release states that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 to Francis Halzen.
Q4 Advanced

Consider the following statements about the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: 1. Francis Halzen shared the prize with two other scientists. 2. IceCube uses light sensors in glacial ice to record flashes produced when neutrinos collide with atomic nuclei. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Show answer

Correct answer: B — 2 only

Only statement 2 is correct. Halzen is the sole laureate (prize share 1/1); IceCube's sensors in clear glacial ice track the flash of light produced when a neutrino collides with an atomic nucleus.
