The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) said on 24 June 2026 that, with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), it has completed Urban River Management Plans (URMPs) for 13 cities, with more plans being prepared in two phases across cities in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar under the Namami Gange Programme. The initiative follows the river-centric planning approach that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for at the National Ganga Council meeting in Kanpur in December 2019, and builds on NIUA pilots in Ayodhya, Kanpur and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.
