NITI Aayog releases second NER District SDG Index; Hnahthial (Mizoram) tops
On 7 July 2025, NITI Aayog released the second edition of the North Eastern Region District SDG Index (2023-24), in which Mizoram's Hnahthial was the best-performing district.
Summary
NITI Aayog released the second edition of the North Eastern Region (NER) District Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index Report (2023-24) on 7 July 2025, developed with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and with technical support from UNDP. Covering 121 districts across the eight North Eastern states, the index found that 85% of districts improved their composite score, all districts of Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura achieved Front Runner status, and Hnahthial in Mizoram scored the highest at 81.43. The first edition was released on 26 August 2021. Districts are classed as Achiever (100), Front Runner (65–99), Performer (50–65) and Aspirant (below 50).
