NHAI starts pilot to build cattle shelters along National Highways to curb stray-cattle accidents

The National Highways Authority of India announced on 24 December 2024 a pilot project to set up cattle shelters along National Highways to reduce stray-cattle accidents. NHAI signed an MoU with its existing concessionaire Gawar Construction Ltd, which will build the shelters on land provided by NHAI and maintain them with first aid, fodder, water and caretakers through the concession period. Shelters of 0.21 to 2.29 hectares are planned on stretches including the Kharkhoda Bypass on NH-334B, the Hansi Bypass on the Bhiwani-Hansi section of NH-148B, the Kiratpur-Ner Chowk section of NH-21 and the Jodhpur Ring Road on NH-112. Under its CSR initiative, the concessionaire will also deploy cattle ambulances and set up first-aid centres and hospitals covering 50 km on each side.
