National Biodiversity Authority gives ₹17 lakh to Mumbai's Biodiversity Management Committee under ABS

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) disbursed ₹17 lakh under the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism to the Biodiversity Management Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, for commercial use of Bacillus soil micro-organisms.

The Environment Ministry said on 29 January 2026 that the NBA has disbursed ₹17 lakh to the Biodiversity Management Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation through the Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board. The money comes from the commercial use of soil micro-organisms of the Bacillus genus to make probiotic products. Under ABS, part of the gains from using biological resources goes back to local communities. The biotechnology sector has contributed about ₹10 crore to the ABS fund.
