A founding member of the party formed in 1998, he served as its general secretary, entered the Rajya Sabha in 2006 and, in the UPA-II government, was Minister of State for Shipping before becoming Railway Minister in 2012. He joined the BJP in 2017, won the Krishnanagar Uttar Assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 2021 and later returned to the Trinamool Congress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death.
