MoSPI releases National Industrial Classification (NIC) 2025 with 6-digit codes
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the National Industrial Classification (NIC) 2025 at Udaipur on 18 November 2025, during the culmination of the NSS's 75th anniversary and World Statistics Day 2025.
Summary
NIC 2025, India's new standard for classifying economic activities, replaces NIC 2008 and is aligned with the UN's International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 5. It introduces a 6-digit coding structure in place of the 5-digit one, with 22 sections (A to V), 87 divisions, 257 groups, 463 classes and 1,887 sub-classes. It captures new areas such as renewable energy, fintech, e-commerce and digital intermediation, and recognises Ayush-based healthcare and the handloom industry. India's classification was first introduced in 1962.
