MoSPI sets up expert group for all-India Household Income Survey

On 23 June 2025 in New Delhi, MoSPI announced a Technical Expert Group chaired by Surjit S. Bhalla to guide an all-India household income distribution survey tentatively scheduled for 2026.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said on 23 June 2025 that it has constituted a Technical Expert Group (TEG) chaired by Surjit S. Bhalla, former Executive Director for India at the IMF, to guide the National Statistics Office on an all-India income distribution survey tentatively scheduled for 2026. MoSPI noted that the National Sample Survey, whose first survey was launched in 1950, has never conducted a full-fledged income survey; earlier pilot attempts did not lead to a nationwide survey.
